xc90 auto transmission not engaging

hi, to update i have just completed an engine swap in my 2003 xc90 its starts and runs fine. a lot better than the old one did! problem is it will not engage in gear mechanically it works if i put it in park i cant move the car. if i put in it netural i can roll the car about am i missing something!! there is one spare plug/connector left over on the radiator harness it runs over the rad fan some plug into the turbo boost valve and the maff and the vacuum boost thing on the air box the one left is a 2 pin socket type is this maybe something to do with my problem?

Hi danlong.
For the transmission not engaging:
Is there a strange noise in R or D? Rattling?
Are you sure the drive shafts have clicked into position?
And the screws for the converter/flexplate are installed?
Did you assemble the transmission while you had the engine "loose" or when the engine was in the vehicle?
Cable harness:
Did you transfer the cable harness from the old engine to the new engine?
